Jace had never really, properly asked Clary out for a date. Even if he'd been a more considerate boyfriend, it simply didn't come up in him. He'd plenty of other things to worry about - even iratzes and Magnus could do so much curing someone from being stabbed in the heart. It was a miracle he had survived, largely thanks to the fact that apparently, he was pure enough at heart that the divine blade hadn't truly killed him, but it had done a bit of damage. Unconsciously he rubbed a hand over the scar that had formed there, still angry and red. Soon enough, it'd fade, turn pink and then white until it was just one more scar to bear. He had busted out of the infirmary quite soon, knowing he'd heal just as well back in the Institute, where he at least felt at home and safe - and had a chance of seeing Clary every now and then, as well as the Lightwoods... And was less likely to burn the people checking in on him.
He acted as if he didn't care, but that wasn't really true. Though he had never been one to appreciate touch much, that wasn't entirely true. Each human being needed human contact, even if he wasn't all that 'huggy' to start with. Thank god he had at least one person he could touch, a person that didn't really mind either. Little mercies, that. Beneath his tough exterior he had a heart to, and while he had guarded that heart pretty well, some things you just couldn't protect yourself against.
Even if he could still spar with Alec and banter with Isabelle, he was acutely aware that life had changed once again, and in a way that was much harder to overcome than he imagined. But that was not what he was dwelling on now. Instead, clad casually in jeans, a white t-shirt and leather jacket, he was on the prowl for Clary. Unbeknownst to her, he had prepared a little surprise to lighten up her day a little and get her mind off her biological brother, as well as having finally a first date for the two of them - one that deserved that name. After some discussion with Alec, he'd opted against showing her around the weapons room, instead arranging with Kaelie that he'd have a basket with food and other necessities, as well as calling an old friend of his to borrow two horses for a romantic ride through Central Park to a safely glamoured open spot for a picnic. "Clary!" he half-shouted when he saw her in the hallway, jogging up to her and grasping her hand, smiling a little as he spun her around, prepared for a possibly violent reaction if he startled. "Grab your coat, we're going," he told her, still smirking.
